Double Red Donations

Red blood cells, which carry oxygen to all parts of the body, comprise 40-50 percent of blood volume and are the most commonly transfused blood product. They are used to treat anemia, replace blood lost due to trauma resulting from accidents or injuries and during surgery.

A double red cell donation is an automated process that allows the donor to give two units of red cells in one visit. In this two-step process, one unit of red cells is collected from the donor and the rest of the blood and saline are returned to the donor.

Double Impact

As a double red cell donor you will double your impact by providing twice as many red cells for patients in need. You will also receive a $10 gift card as a thank you for your time and donation.

A double red cell donation procedure takes 30-40 minutes, a bit longer than a traditional blood donation.
A donor can give double red cells every 112 days.
Donor requirements for Double Red Cell Donations:

  • Must be at least 16-years old. 16-year old donors require parental permission. Download the permission form here.
  • Have a high iron level in your blood to be able to donate additional red cells.
  • Women must be at least 5'5” tall and weigh 150 pounds
  • Men must be at least 5'1” and weigh 130 pounds

Type O donors are especially suited to double red cell donations because 45 percent of the population has Type O blood. Additionally, Type O Negative is in even greater demand because all patients can receive that blood type.
